Ria Formosa Natural Park

The Ria Formosa Natural Park is one of the Algarve’s most remarkable natural treasures, renowned for its diverse landscapes and unique ecological importance. Elected as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal, this exceptional coastal lagoon is constantly shaped by the movement of winds, currents and tides, creating an ever-changing natural environment. Classified as a Natural Park in 1987, it covers approximately 18,000 hectares and is protected from the Atlantic Ocean by five barrier islands and two peninsulas.

Recognised under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance, the Ria Formosa encompasses a rich variety of habitats, including barrier islands, marshes, tidal flats, dunes, salt pans, freshwater lagoons and woodlands. These diverse ecosystems support an impressive array of flora and fauna, making the park one of Portugal’s most important wildlife sanctuaries and a paradise for birdwatchers.

During your stay at Ria Park Hotels, discover this protected natural wonder through guided walks, cycling trails, boat excursions or kayaking adventures. An unforgettable experience that reveals the Algarve’s unique beauty, biodiversity and natural heritage.

The Golden Triangle

The area of the central Algarve between Quinta do Lago, Almancil and Vilamoura is often referred to as the Golden Triangle of the Algarve. It has an abundance of luxury accommodation in beautiful settings, some of the best golf courses in the Algarve, lovely sandy beaches and is only about 20 minutes from Faro International Airport.

The region is home to a collection of luxury resorts, complemented by a wide selection of restaurants, shops and excellent leisure facilities, offering something for every member of the family to enjoy.

When to go and weather

The Algarve enjoys a privileged climate throughout the year, with mild winters, warm summers and more than 300 days of sunshine annually. Whatever the season, it offers ideal conditions for enjoying the region’s natural beauty and outdoor lifestyle.

For those seeking a more tranquil experience, the months of April, May, June and September are particularly appealing, combining pleasant temperatures with quieter beaches and attractions. July and August bring the vibrant energy of the summer season, with lively beach clubs, outdoor events and a bustling atmosphere along the coastline.

From November to February, the Algarve reveals a different charm. While evenings can be cooler, sunny days remain common, creating the perfect conditions for golfing, walking, cycling and exploring the region’s landscapes and cultural heritage at a more relaxed pace.

Getting Around

Exploring the Algarve is both easy and convenient. Car hire remains the most popular way to discover the region, offering the freedom to explore its picturesque coastline, charming villages and hidden natural treasures at your own pace. Rental services are widely available, including at Faro International Airport.

For those who prefer public transport, the Algarve is served by a network of bus and rail connections linking the region’s main towns and attractions. The coastal railway line connects destinations from Lagos to Vila Real de Santo António, while regular services also provide convenient access to Lisbon and other major Portuguese cities.
